Comments on the DLC proposed requirements for lighting fixtures and lightbulbs
Why we need to comment, and object to proposed DLC lighting requirements
The future availability of healthy lighting (full spectrum, circadian-friendly, infrared etc) is again under attack.
The Design Lights Consortium (DLC), an independent body that sets standards for both lighting fixtures & lamps, has opened for comment their proposed new standards (SSL V6.0) which significantly raise lumens per watt minimums for fixtures (increased to 125 – 145 l/w) and E26 lamps (increased to 130 l/w). The deadline to comment is Thursday September 4, 2025.
DLC’s excessively high lumens per watt standards mean all the electrical energy consumed has to go to creating visual brightness (green and yellow wavelengths) and not provide the circadian timed blue and/or red and infrared wavelengths which support human health.
Ironically the DLC have created an exemption with much lower lumens per watt standards (30-70 l/w) for outdoor “turtle protecting” lights However, they provide no such lower lumens per watt exemption for human health protecting lights. In other words protecting turtles appears to be more important to the DLC than protecting humans!
We need to ensure that lights which protect human health get at least equal attention and protection – with lower lumens per watt standards.
